Sharjah Book Authority opens the door for candidacy for the “Targman” award

The Sharjah Book Authority announced the opening of the nomination for the eighth session of the Sharjah Prize for Translation, “Tarjman”, which aims to enhance the presence of Arabic literature in the global cultural scene, and to encourage foreign publishing houses to translate the masterpieces of creativity and Arab thought into other languages, in a way that contributes to building cultural and knowledge bridges between peoples.
The total value of the award is 1.4 million dirhams, and is granted for the best foreign translation of one of the Arabic works, reflecting the commitment of the commission and the “Sharjah International Book Fair” to consolidate the position of translation as a way to enhance human dialogue and civilized communication, and transfer Arab knowledge and creativity to the world.
The authority continues to receive candidacy requests until September 15, and announces the names of the winners during the opening ceremony of the 44th session of the exhibition in November, and provides those interested in the opportunity to identify the standards of candidacy, through the official website of the exhibition.

Ahmed bin Rakad Al -Amiri, CEO of the Authority, emphasized that the award reflects the commitment to the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and the directives of Sheikha Badour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Authority’s Board of Directors, towards promoting the presence of Arabic literature, and the civilizational project of the emirate on the global scene.
He added: «The translation is a process of building a common awareness between civilizations, and an effective tool to enhance understanding and mutual respect, and expand the circle of cultural dialogue, and from here we worked under the directives and leadership of Sheikha Badour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, provided that the award is a platform that supports partnerships between publishing houses and translators, and opens to Arabic literature new horizons to reach readers in their motherlands, and transfer the essence of Arab creativity to the world. It constitutes a bridge that links Arab culture and the world, and enhances the role of knowledge as a common name for humanity.
The award opens its door to publishing houses that have accomplished the first foreign translation approved for a distinguished Arabic work in its first edition, with the requirement to provide four paper copies of the translated book, and one copy of the original Arabic work, along with a summary of both Arabic or the language of translation that does not exceed 500 words, including the definition of the author, the content of the work, and its cultural and literary importance, as the award requires the attachment of documents that prove rights Publishing and translation.
The award celebrates all parties contributing to the translation process and honing them, starting with the translator who gets 100 thousand dirhams, and the Arab Publishing House that issued the original work, which receives 30% of the amount, and ends with the foreign publishing house that receives 70% of the value of the remaining award.
